3월에 가장 기억에 남는 기념일이라고 하면 우리에게는 삼일절이라고 할 수 있을 것 같다.
그 외에 어떤 기념일이 있는지 찾아보다가 국제 여성의 날, 세계 여성의 날에 대해 알게 되었다.
또 단순히 빵과 장미를 달라고 외치는 것에서 끝나지 않고, 지금까지도 이 연대가 이어져 나와, 2024년 캠페인 주제에 대해서도 알게 되었다.
요즘은 여성의 날이라는 것에 대해 의미가 변색되어가고 있는 것 같다는 사실이 아쉬울 따름이다.
많은 사람들이 이 뜻에 대해 알아가면 좋을 것 같다.
세계 여성의 날이란
세계 여성의 지위 향상을 위한 날로, 1908년 3월 8일 미국의 여성 노동자들이 근로여건 개선과 참정권 등을 요구하면서 시위를 벌인 것에서 시작됐다. 이후 유엔은 1975년을 '세계 여성의 해'로 지정하고 1977년 3월 8일을 특정해 '세계 여성의 날'로 공식 지정하였다. 우리나라에서는 2018년 법정기념일로 공식 지정돼, 관련 단체들이 다양한 행사들을 진행한다.
세계 여성의 날 역사
1908년 3월 8일 미국 1만 5,000여 명의 여성 노동자들은 뉴욕의 루트커스 광장에 모여 선거권과 노동조합 결성의 자유를 쟁취하기 위한 대대적인 시위를 벌였다. 이때 시위에서 노동자들은 '우리에게 빵과 장미를 달라'고 외쳤는데, 여기서 빵은 남성과 비교해 저임금에 시달리던 여성들의 생존권을, 장미는 참정권을 뜻하는 것이었다. 당시 미국의 여성 노동자들은 먼지가 가득한 최악의 현장에서 하루 12~14시간씩 일해야 했으나, 선거권과 노동조합 결성 자유 등 기본적인 권리도 부여받지 못했다. 이에 봉기한 전 의류 노동자들의 시위는 결국 1910년 '의류노동자연합'이라는 조직 창설로 이어지기도 했다.
그러다 1911년 유럽에서 첫 행사가 개최된 이후 세계 각국에서 남녀 차별 철폐와 여성 지위 향상 등을 요구하는 움직임이 확산됐다. 이에 유엔은 1975년을 '세계 여성의 해'로 지정하고 1977년 3월 8일을 특정해 세계 여성의 날로 공식화했다. 한편, 전세계적으로 3월 8일 여성의 날이 되면 빵과 장미를 나눠주는 행사가 실시된다.
한국의 여성의 날
우리나라에서는 1920년부터 나혜석·박인덕 등이 세계 여성의 날을 기념해 왔으나, 일제의 탄압으로 맥이 끊겼다가 1985년부터 공식적으로 기념하기 시작했다. 그리고 2018년 2월 20일 여성의 날을 법정기념일로 지정하는 내용의 '양성평등기본법' 일부 개정안이 국회에서 통과되면서, 2018년부터 3월 8일이 법정기념일인 '여성의 날'로 공식 지정됐다.

With well over a century of history and change, the first International Women's Day (IWD) was held in March 1911.
IWD isn't country, group or organization specific.
It's a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women's equality.
World-renowned feminist, journalist and activist, Gloria Steinem, reportedly once explained:
"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
So together, let's all help fight the good fight. All IWD activity is valid, that's what makes IWD so inclusive. Join in and make IWD your day, doing what you can to support and advance women.

When women aren't present, we must ask: "If not, why not?"
When women are discriminated against, we must call out poor practice.
When the treatment of women is not equitable, we must take action.
And we must do this each time, every time.

Organizations, groups, and individuals worldwide can all play a part - in the community, at work, at home, and beyond.
To truly include women means to openly embrace their diversity of race, age, ability, faith, body image, and how they identify. Worldwide, women must be included in all fields of endeavour.

On an individual basis, it's important to understand, value and seek out the inclusion of women and girls. Additionally, sharing this knowledge, support and encouragement with others is key.
On an organizational or group basis, there are many ways to ensure the needs, interests and aspirations of women and girls are valued and included. Organizations and groups can #InspireInclusion through action in areas such as:
- forging women's economic empowerment
- recruiting, retaining and developing female talent
- supporting women and girls into leadership, decision-making, business and STEM
- designing and building infrastructure meeting the needs of women and girls
- helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health
- involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security
- providing women and girls with access to quality education and training
- elevating women and girl's participation and achievement in sport
- promoting creative and artistic talent of women and girls
- addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls
